The Importance of Generators in Covington
Southeast Louisiana faces unpredictable weather, from severe thunderstorms and heavy rains to tropical storms. Power outages during these events can disrupt daily life, damage property, and compromise safety. Beyond weather, even routine utility interruptions can impact homes and businesses that rely on continuous power.
Installing a generator provides several key benefits:
- Keeping your home or business operational during storms or outages
- Maintaining power for sensitive electronics and appliances
- Supporting safety systems, lighting, and refrigeration
- Minimizing downtime for businesses and supporting continuity
- Maintaining access to medical devices and equipment
A generator load analysis helps distinguish essential circuits from optional loads before equipment is selected. Depending on the system, priorities may include air conditioning, refrigeration, lighting, communications, security equipment, medical devices, or essential business equipment. An automatic transfer switch, which transfers the electrical supply between utility and generator power, allows a standby generator to respond without requiring the customer to connect it manually.
We can evaluate your power priorities and recommend a Kohler® system before you schedule an installation.
Generator Installation & Permit Considerations in Covington
Generator installation in Covington requires planning beyond selecting the equipment. Depending on the property and generator model, a project may involve site assessment, compliant equipment placement, an approved support base, fuel-line work, an automatic transfer switch, electrical connections, inspections, and final system testing. Fuel availability, electrical load, zoning conditions, and whether the property is in a floodplain can affect the installation requirements.
The City of Covington publishes a generator permit checklist and identifies the 2021 International Residential Code, 2020 National Electrical Code, and 2021 International Fuel Gas Code among its applicable construction codes. City guidance also states that inspections must be requested one business day in advance. Construction in a floodplain requires a permit under Covington’s flood information guidance.
Before installation begins, customers should confirm how permitting, inspections, fuel connections, transfer equipment, and final system operation apply to the property. An evaluation can also identify whether you need a new installation, a replacement, an upgrade, or service for an existing Kohler® generator.
